Tallow for the Barn

We begin this blog post with a blessing.

Thank you Lord for all the glory the cow provides to man.  Amen.

Tallow is God given. Written in the beginning chapters of the Old Testament. The first offering to God included fat portions from Abel’s flock

A sweet aroma to the Lord – Leviticus 1:17

Though tallow has been around for millennia, it disappeared over the course of industrialization. After some time, tallow has made a stellar comeback in natural skincare. Tallow is full of vitamins, minerals, and is biologically more suitable for human skin than plant based products. It is no wonder why people are getting back on the wagon again.

The benefits of tallow for humans are plentiful, but did you know that tallow is not just good for humans, but also for horses, equine, livestock and poultry? It is!

In order for the wagon to take you places, you’re gonna need a horse or two. And what do we do with our horses? We take care of them. How can we take care of them? By using tallow!

Tallow provides the following benefits to your farm animals:

  • Nutrient dense with vitamins A, D, E and K
  • Deeply moisturizing
  • Provides a protective barrier

Farm animals for which tallow is safe:

  • Horses
  • All equine
  • All livestock
  • Poultry

Recommendations

It is recommended to store barn tallow in the fridge, if possible. This will lengthen the life of the tallow, prevent it from melting and also provide a nice cooling effect during application.

Please note that unscented is the safest version for the barn though there are some essential oils, such as lavender, that are considered safe. Please research before using any essential oil on any animal to ensure that it is safe.

Majesty Tallow Ingredients

Our unscented tallow is made with locally grass-fed suet and trim plus local beeswax to create a naturally healing combination for your barn animals.

Here are a few success stories from the barn.

Bella’s Eye

Bella is one of our boarding horses. She hurt the top of her eye while in the stall. It was nothing too serious but it sure was an unsightly gash. The barn manager tried putting antibiotic topical ointment on, but she resisted and it was very difficult to get the ointment on her wound.

After finding out tallow is safe for horses, we brought some tallow to the barn. We introduced the tallow to Bella and let her smell it. She immediately approved and allowed me to apply some to her eye. And we applied it each time we went to the barn and she healed nicely. She is a very happy horse.

Star’s Scratch

Star is one of our older horses and she had a few scratches on her cheek. She allowed me to rub some in. The tallow goes on so smooth and silky, I actually ended up giving her a mini facial massage. Star is now glowing.

Quail’s Assault

Our one broody, miracle of a quail hen was assaulted by a mean rooster. This particular rooster was so mean and abusive to the flock, he ended up pecking our beautiful broody hen on her head. She was bleeding and completely uncomfortable. We compressed a warm cloth on her wound and applied a nice lather of cold, unscented tallow on her. She was immediately relieved and expected to make a full recovery from the incident. As for the mean and nasty rooster, he was grilled over charcoal and devoured.

Conclusion

Tallow is a natural, healing moisturizer. We believe that God gave us animals to care for so that they can care for us in return. One way we can take care of the cow is by using all their glory so their death does not go in vain. Tallow has been a wonderful addition to our animal care routine and we think you should get on the wagon with us!
